Career as author and teacher

Joseph Murphy Ph. D, DRS, LL.D. (1898 - 1981) was a New Thought author and teacher.

Joseph Murphy lectured and taught to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world for over fifty years on the powers of the subconscious mind and prosperity. He was educated in Ireland and England. Years of research studying the world’s major religions convinced him that some great untapped power is within you and all of us.

For some time, Murphy studied under a black Jewish teacher named Abdullah on the topics of religion, mysticism and imagination, and it was his study with Abdullah that gave Murphy the foundations to his understanding in the field of subconscious mind and using the power of imagination to change our lives. Another author who also studied under Abdullah is the mystic Neville Goddard, who also teaches about the power of imagination.

Joseph Murphy's most popular book is "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind", which he described in simple terms how one can use one's thoughts to change circumstances and to attain certain goals in life. Until today, this book still remains as the 'guide book' on the topic of using one's subconscious mind to change one's life. Typically, his books are filled with stories after stories of how people who applied his method of prayer and imagination have achieved results in the most remarkable ways.

Murphy himself noted that, as a young man, he used his subconscious mind to completely heal himself of a skin cancer.

Dr. Murphy was Minister-Director of the Church of Divine Science in Los Angeles for 28 years, where his lectures were attended by over a thousand people almost every Sunday.

It is interesting to note that, in one of his later books "The Truth Shall Set You Free", Murphy casually revealed that the Bible is in actuality a story that contains many psychological and mystical symbolism written by ancient men who understood the creative powers of human thought and imagination. He takes from the book of John, deciphering the symbology and allegory of each story. Whether this knowledge was passed to him from Abdullah or Neville, is uncertain. It is noted that Neville also taught the symbolic stories from the bible in his own lectures. Also Murphy added (as Neville did in his book "Your Faith Is Your Fortune"), that the story of Jesus is also an ancient symbolic story associated with the pagan worship of the Sun.
